Family is the Cornerstone of the Italian Culture

This past weekend has a significant defining moment on me , as we pay our respects to the passing of a generous kind man, Salvatore Pullano within the Italian community. Salvatore ( known to his coworker friends as Sami) was born in Travena ,Catanzaro on December 7 1946 ; Taverna is a comune and town in the province of Catanzaro in the Calabria region, southern tip of Italy.

I had the honour to meet Salvatore and his dear wife Santina , at the “European Painting and Wallcoverings Co “ Christmas party. Salvatore son, Carlo invited my daughter Trisha and I to a funfilled family dinner gathering with their employees.

In Loving Memory of Salvatore Pullano

You see — Salvatore came to Canada to start a better life so many years ago , taking the long trip precariously by boat. He started his own company “European Painting & Wallcoverings Co” teaching his sons, Carlo and Emilio, the fine craft of painting elegant homes with just the right professionalism, leading to a strong clientele with repeat customers. Despite facing numerous setbacks, Salvatore demonstrated unwavering perseverance in pursuing his dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur. Today, European Painting & Wallcoverings Company has successfully maintained this professionalism with Carlo, (now at the helm), leading the way with pride and honour of his dad’s dream and legacy.

When I first met the Pullano family, it was like being back home during the time with my Grandpa Tony Varze , who was also born in Italy; Corropoli to be precise. I immediately felt the warm Italian compassion of acceptance , where family is the cornerstone of the Italian community. After my Mom and Nonno ( Grandfather) passed away, I slowly lost contact with the Italian community; sensing something amiss within my heart.

You see — in the Italian culture, the concept of “La Familglia” goes way beyond family relationships, as close friends are considered part of the extended family. Italian’s highly value compassion and empathy, treating extended family friends with respect and acceptance. Honestly is considered the best policy and extended into their businesses , where transparency and integrity are key elements for establishing successful partnerships. This is why Salvatore’s dream of owning his own business became successful ; notions of integrity and trustworthiness is the backbone of any successful company.

In the Italian culture, family gathering with a meal is a highly cherished tradition, and what better way than to invite your extended family members.

It was indeed a privilege to have the opportunity to meet Salvatore before his unfortunate passing. This past weekend was a somber moment but also a time to celebrate the legacy of a great man, Salvatore Pullano. May he rest in peace and one day we can once again met in the heavens above.

Grazie. Siete la mia forza! (Thank you. You are my strength!)

Amore con amici ( Love with Friends)

PS : If you met me in person you’ll find I have a hard time leading a conversation; in fact I say few words. Nevertheless , my heart and voice is heard through my words on paper.

During the Okanagan College days, our English Professor helped me guide my voice when he learned about the traumatic experiences I had as a child. To this day I fear any kind of rejection due to physical violence. My dad was a real monster who did unimaginable things, no father should ever do. So — when I meet an Italian family with all the acceptance and love, it hits my heart dearly, reassuring there are good people out there.

Thank you Salvatore ( In Loving Memory) and his wife, Santina, sons Carlo ( Christina) and family, and Emilio ( Caterina) and family.

It’s been said,” A defining moment in your life is an occasion where your life’s path has undeniably changed.”

Grazie!
