Easy Stromboli
Yields: 6-8 servings Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 25-30 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 pound homemade pizza dough ( See my easy recipe)
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce or marinara sauce
- 1/2 pound Italian sausage, cooked and crumbled (or other cooked meats like pepperoni, ham, or salami)
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded provolone cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup chopped vegetables (such as onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach), sautéed if using raw
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Italian seasoning, optional
- Garlic powder, optional
Equipment:
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper

Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 12×18 inches.
- Spread the sauce: Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.5
- Add the fillings: Sprinkle half of the mozzarella, provolone, and Parmesan cheeses over the sauce. Then, distribute the cooked sausage (or other meats) and vegetables evenly over the cheese. Top with the remaining cheese. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning and/or garlic powder, if desired.
- Roll up the Stromboli: Starting from one of the long edges, tightly roll the dough up into a log. Pinch the seam closed and tuck the ends under to seal.6
- Place on baking sheet: Carefully transfer the Stromboli to the prepared baking sheet, seam-side down.
- Make slits: Using a sharp knife, make several diagonal slits across the top of the Stromboli.7 This allows steam to escape during baking and prevents the crust from bursting.8
- Egg wash: Brush the entire Stromboli with the beaten egg. This will give it a nice golden brown color.
- Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Rest and slice: Let the Stromboli rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving. This will help the filling set and prevent it from spilling out.
Variations:
- Vegetarian: Use a mix of roasted vegetables like zucchini, eggplant, and bell peppers, along with some ricotta cheese.
- Meat Lovers: Combine pepperoni, sausage, ham, and bacon.
- Chicken: Use cooked, shredded chicken with pesto sauce and roasted red peppers.
- Spicy: Add some red pepper flakes or jalapeños to the filling.
- Different cheeses: Experiment with different cheeses like fontina, asiago, or cheddar.9
Tips:
- Don’t overfill: Too much filling will make the Stromboli difficult to roll and may cause it to burst during baking.
- Roll tightly: A tight roll will help the Stromboli hold its shape and prevent the filling from spilling out.10
- Seal the seams well: Make sure the seam and ends are tightly sealed to prevent the filling from leaking.11
- Use a serrated knife for slicing: A serrated knife will slice through the Stromboli cleanly without crushing it.12
This recipe is very versatile, so feel free to customize it with your favorite fillings!
Great to serve this evening !
Cheers !
